The Signs of Torture
Most of these pictures are old or even refer to the first
conflict in Chechnya. A government-controlled information
blockade and campaigns of disinformation or falsified information is
withholding facts and neither independent observers nor the media can
gain access to the war zones and the detention centers. Russia obstructs the
access to Chechnya or to any independent human rights organization and
it is impossible to control the source and origin of these images.
However this can only reinforce the claims that hundreds of refugees
permanently report: torture and extra-judical killings are an everyday
reality in Chechnya.
Vakha, 32, was stopped at
a Russian checkpoint, where he was taken into a ditch and beaten. He
was found in a hole by the side of the road by some children whose
parents brought him to the hospital (From Time.com - "In the Ruins of
