CHECHNYA: RUSSIAN TROOPS
BLOW UP “BUNDLES” OF CHECHEN PRISONERS. WILL THE COMMISSION REACT
?
Brussels, 3 March 2003. According to reports gathered by the Russian organisation
Mémorial, Russian troops have developed a technique to get rid of the bodies
of the victims of combing operations that consists in blowing them up in “bundles”.
One witness of these atrocities is Salman Khadjalaev, a farmer from Samachki,
a village to the west of Grozny, who managed to identify the "remains" of
his son, mutilated along with other victims, near Sernovodsk – not
far from the border with Ingushetia.
Attempts to gather reports of these methods are seriously hampered both by the
difficulties experienced by relatives in identifying the victims and by the fear
of Russian reprisals.
Question from Olivier Dupuis, Secretary of the Transnational Radical Party and
Member of the European Parliament, to the Commission:
“Has the Commission already carried out detailed inquiries into these acts
committed by the Russian military, acts that can only be described as war crimes
and crimes against humanity? In what way has the Commission expressed its indignation
to the Russian authorities? What steps does the Commission intend to take to denounce
these crimes in all the relevant international organisations?”
