Chechen FM welcomes
US Senate draft resolution on Russia/G-8 December 1, 2003 Press release: Chechen Foreign Ministry welcomes a draft resolution ofthe United States Senate urging US President to suspend Russia’smembership in the Group of Eight. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeriawelcomes a draft resolution of the United States Senate introduced byU.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) on November21, urging US President to suspend Russia’s membership in the Group ofEight (G-8) industrialized democracies “until the Russian Governmentends its assault on political freedom, independent media, and the ruleof law and demonstrates its commitment to the democratic principles thatunite all other members of the G-8.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeriafirmly believes that the McCain-Lieberman sponsored resolution, whichamong other things observes that Russia’s “widespread atrocities againstcivilians in Chechnya do not reflect the minimum standards of democraticgovernance and rule of law that characterize every other member of theG-8”, is an important step forward in the interests of both the Russianand Chechen peoples. An undemocratic Russia that commits genocidal war crimes and crimesagainst humanity in Chechnya and denies rights and freedoms to its owncitizens in Russia does not represent the will of the Russian people andmust have no place in the group of developed democracies. The Ministryof Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria hopes that theproposed resolution will become a corner stone of the United StatesForeign Policy towards the current Russian regime, which has crossed alllimits of a responsible political leadership and must be held accountable.
