Suicide attacks in Chechnya since 1999


A woman suicide bomber ambushed a bus carrying Russian air force pilots near rebel Chechnya on Thursday, blowing it up and killing at  least 13 people, the defence ministry said.

Following is a list of previous suicide attacks in Chechnya since renewed fighting began between Russian forces and Chechen rebels in 1999:

June 7, 2000 - In the first attack of its kind in Chechnya, two Russian OMON crack police are killed and five wounded in a suicide car-bomb attack in the village of Alkhan-Yurt, southwest of the regional capital Grozny.

June 11, 2000 - Two Russian soldiers killed and one wounded in a suicide bomb attack at a checkpoint near Grozny.

June 12, 2000 - A car explodes at a Russian checkpoint in the Chernorechiye district of the capital Grozny. Chechen rebels say it was carried out by a former Russian soldier who had converted to Islam.

July 2-3, 2000 - Chechen guerrillas launch five suicide bomb attacks on bases of Russian security forces over a 24-hour period. In the deadliest, at least 54 people are killed in an attack on a police commando dormitory in Argun, near Grozny. The Russian interior ministry for Chechnya based in Gudermes is also targeted. Six Russian troops are killed.

Nov 29, 2001 - One Russian soldier is killed and three injured, including a regional military commandant, in a suicide bomb attack in Urus-Martan. The suicide bomber is also killed.

Dec 27, 2002 - Chechen rebel suicide bombers ram vehicles into the local government headquarters in Grozny, causing the roof and floors of the four-storey building to collapse. Chechen officials say about 80 people killed.

May 12, 2003 - Two suicide bombers drive a truck full of explosives into a government administration and security complex in Znamenskoye, in northern Chechnya. Fifty-nine people were killed, and scores hurt in the blast.

May 14, 2003 - At least 16 people are killed in a suicide bomb attack during a religious festival taking place east of Grozny in the town of Iliskhan-Yurt. 145 were wounded.
