Life after referendum

On April 5 Russian troops abducted 6 villagers in the settlement of Duba-Yurt: Said-Hussein Islamov, Yakubov, 32, Begichev, 18, Gapurov, 19, and also father and son Mezhidovs - Djamalail, 44, and Saipudi, 18.

On April 7 in the Oktyabrsky district in Grozny (30th district) two local residents blew up on a mine: school-boy Islam Amirkhanov, 15, and Arbi Chebdurkhanov, 30. The boy died on the spot, Chebdurkhanov was heavily wounded and hospitalized. Local residents have no doubts a so-called "petalled" mine exploded in the given case. Russian planes dropped such mines in the district in the summer 2002.

On April 15 in the settlement of Roshni-Chu Russian troops seized three young men who pastured cattle in the outskirts. Including the cousins Umarovs - Islam and Kharon, born 1975, and Vlaid Isakov, born in 1969. All of them were taken to the Urus-Martan ROVD. Later the head of the village administration managed to have the brothers Umarovs released, Valid Isakov has remained in custody.

On April 16 three teenagers disappeared near the military base of Khankala. They were 8th grade pupils of the school No. 16 in Grozny. In the morning a woman living close to the base saw the boys. They were collecting scrap iron on the territory of ruined dachas (close to Khankala). The names of two of them are known - the brothers Mekhtievs. On April 17 fragments of the boys' bodies were discovered by policemen of the Oktyabrsky district ROVD in Grozny. According to eyewitnesses, the blown up remains of the boys were placed into a small plastic bag. Relatives of the dead do not excluded the boys fell victims of an
extrajudicial execution by Russian troops. People say a person who steps on a mine is never blown to pieces. In the given case we face an incident when people are being tied together and then blown up with dynamite. Such method of extrajudicial execution is practiced by Russian special troops, the so-called "death squadrons" which are known for their cruelty.

On April 14 in the village of Novy Tsentoroy Russian troops killed Arbi Balatayev, 13. In the morning on that day Arbi and several teenagers went to pasture cattle. At about 10 a.m. Russian troops based in the outskirts of the settlement suddenly opened automatic fire on the boys. Having left the cattle the boys rushed away and managed to leave the firing zone. However, Arbi Balatayev was wounded and remained bleeding out in the field. For several hours the military did not allow anyone to approach the place where the heavily wounded boy lied. He bled to death.

On April 17 in the settlement of Kirov in the Leninsky district of Grozny masked and camouflaged armed men abducted two local residents: Maksud Djaubytyrov (Rzhevskaya street) and Aslan Mahmudov (Uchenicheskaya street).

On April 22 three dead bodies of young men were discovered on the Minutka square in Grozny. The bodies were discovered in a semi-ruined building where previously was located. Signs of tortures were found on them. All three of them had firearm wounds into the head - the so-called control shots.

On April 23 the remains of three young men where discovered near the military base of Khankala (the eighth pit). The victims of an extrajudicial execution were identified the next day: they were residents of Chechen-Aul in the Grozny district Adam Ayubov, born in 1970, Hassan Yunusov, born in 1971, and Aslan Israilov, born in 1973.

One of the dead was a Chechen police officer, and Aslan Israilov was a prominent sportsman, a USSR champion in free-style wrestling. All three of them were detained on November 3, 2002, at the road-block on the Minutka square in Grozny.

On April 27 at about 4 a.m. Russian troops opened mortar fire on the territory of a forestry in Achkhoi-Martan. According to eyewitnesses, the fire was opened from the side of the military commandant's office. Several mines which exploded on the territory of the forestry destroyed 4 buses.

Residents of the Naursky district have recently witnessed frequent cases of harassment of local residents from the side of the military. At night federals break into houses and take people away, sometimes they seize people out in the street. Frequently drugs or weapons are being planted on detainees, tortures and beatings are used to make them "confess" they used to fight against the Russian army. Then they are released on a written notice not to flee after relatives pay a ransom of 30,000-40,000 rubles.

Until recently the Naurskydistrict has been considered one of the most calm areas. However, in recent weeks "law enforcers" received unlimited authority and are guided by a well know Bolshevist principle: "If there is a person, a proper criminal article will be found."

On April 29 in the tent camp of "Sputnik" located in the outskirts of the settlement of Ordjonikidzevskaya, a tent of the family of Shoipovs - refugee from Chechnya (11 person including 6 children) burnt. The property of the family was lost in the fire. As a result of the fire the mother of the family received heavy burns, although she managed to rescue the family documents.
