Kadyrov's collaborators fighting against Chechen women

Moscow-based ITAR-TASS news agency reported referring to the headquarters of the invaders' troops that in Gudermes Kadyrov's collaborators detained a 50-year-old local woman Havani Usmanova. A grenade launcher, 50 assault-rifle cartridges and three grenade-launcher shells were planted in her home.

Two children died in Chechnya

Moscow-based Interfax news agency reported referring to the puppet structures that two children died in a fire in Nozhai-Yurt District of the country. The agency reported that a house belonging to an officer of puppet power structures was caught on fire in the village of Nozhai-Yurt.

Two minor children were in the house. The children were unable to get out when the house was on fire and they died. Preliminary reports say that the fire could have been caused by a gas leak.

Russian invaders hand body of a kidnapped over to relatives

Press Service of Chechen Committee for National Rescue (CCNR) reported that an unknown group of Russian invaders kidnapped Mr. Said-Magomed Turluyev in the village of Alkhan-Yurt on December 31, 2003. During the kidnapping they killed a local resident Vaha Hatuyev, b. 1946, and Mr. Turluyev, who was kidnapped, was seriously wounded.

CCNR found out that February 6 the invaders handed Mr. Turluyev's body over to his relatives at the main base in Khankala.

No water in Chechen refugee camps

Water has been shut off in the camps of Chechen forced settlers on the territory of neighboring Ingushetia. On February 11 representatives of MSF ('Doctors Without Borders') inspected a number of temporary placement facilities including Satsita and Sputnik refugee camps (village of Orjonikidzevskaya), Bart (city of Karabulak) and a few other camps. There was no running water in any of these facilities.

The absence of running water in refugee camps and temporary placement facilities may cause all sorts of infectious diseases to break out, since people have to limit the use of water and use dirty water from the rivers and other sources. The forced settlers believe that the water was shut down to start a new wave of putting pressure on the refugees.

By creating unbearable conditions for Chechen refugees on the territory of Ingushetia, Moscow is thus trying to make them leave for occupied Chechnya 'voluntarily', - Council of Non-Governmental Organizations reported.

"Peace to Our Home" action devoted to problems of young people in Chechnya

The offices of the Human Rights Center "Memorial" in Nazran and Grozny arranged the Peace to Our Home peacemaking action in December 2003 - January 2004.

The goal of the action was to attract the attention of the Russian people to the problems of young people in Chechnya, as well as to help the Chechen State University restore the library which burnt during bombardments of Grozny in 1995.

Those who wished to take part in the action were offered to send books and/or New Year's greeting cards to students and teachers of the university.

The similar action was arranged abroad under the slogan "Peace to Our Planet".

Due to the international action, the university's library stock was replenished with belletristic and professional literature in 6 languages. The university received 200 New Year's greetings from more than 20 counties of the world.

Thus, the University of Helsinki alone sent 100 kilograms of professional and belletristic literature to Grozny, and Timothy Richardson of the US Embassy personally handed over two boxes of books on US history and culture to the Nazran office of the Human Rights Center "Memorial".

The literature keeps on being received. The decision has been made to extend the action till the end of 2004.

The Human Rights Center "Memorial" has to establish with regret that the Russian action "Peace to Our Home" has not come about in fact.

We thank those few Russians who sent books and greetings to Chechen students. Friends, your words and gifts are of much value in Chechnya.
