Fights near Achkhoi-Martan

On February 1, 2003 Russian units started shelling forests in Achkhoi-Martan district. They have been firing and bombarding for 24 hours for the fourth day already. According to witnesses, they saw bandaged Russian soldiers passing the settlement in APCs. It seems a military operation is carried on in the forests near Achkhoi-Martan. (From our correspondent.).

Grozny

Oktyabrsky ROVD head assassination

On February 2, 2003 in Grozny the head of Oktyabrsky ROVD (policestation), militia major Visita Erznukaev was murdered. The bomb had been installed in Erznukaev's official car "Zhiguli". At the moment of explosionnear the killed there was the car's driver. No information about his life has been received. The murder is investigated by members of Oktyabrsky ROVD together with Chechen Ministry of Interior Affairs and Federal Security Service of the Chechen Republic. The assassination might be connected with Erzukaev's professional activity.

Forced disappearances in the village Novye Aldy.

On February 3, 2003 at 4.00 a.m. in the village Novye Aldy Russianservicemen broke into the house of the Bukhaev family. The faces of some "guests" were covered with masks. They seized Khanpasha Bukhaev (1972) and his uncle Said-Emin Bukhaev (1950). The latter was thrown  out of the APC on the road. Nothing has been heard from Khanpasha Bukhaev.
